During our nearly two weeks in Guatemala we’ve been spoiled with lots of fabulous meals.
Antigua
Samsara: Our first breakfast in Antigua: delicious!!!
Quiltro:
Mama and Papa took the 7 course tasting menu which included Shrimp, roasted pineapple, black corn and chorizo mayonnaise with fruit, Green wine marinated Mamón Chino, Zucchini with roasted watermelon and maracuja, Grilled Vegetables, Capa cheese and Talmete Honey salad, Roasted eggplant corn puree and basil, chuchito and caramel milk beetroot, cacao nips and cream, Beer ice cream, toffee, meringue, black salt and clover.
Vyas took the grilled vegetable salad and Nilay and I took the corn purée with roasted aubergine (yummy yummy!!) and of course tried everything else. I was surprised: I actually liked the zucchini watermelon salad and I really, REALLY don’t like watermelon!
Y tú Piña está también:
I (who’ve become quite the expert on the subject of French toast on this trip), declare theirs probably the best one ever – right after the grand master Ottolenghi of Notting Hill, of course.
Flores
La Casa de Enrico:
our driver David took us to a great place for breakfast right by the water and while we were talking, told us about a local funghi that grows on the bark of trees in the Petén jungle in the rainy season, called Tzinquinche. Given how much Papa loooooves his mushrooms, David had the idea to ask the chef if he happened to have some and, luckily, he did! So he cooked up a few with some tomatoes, garlic, chilli and served them on corn chips. Nilay quite liked them, I thought they were too spicy and Vyas didn’t like them at all. Mama and Papa however really really liked them.
En route to El Paredón:
Rellenito: Banana beignet filled with black beans (the Guatemalan answer to the Japanese red bean “crèpes” Dorayaki – the boys have a hard time deciding, but mama’s vote goes to the Rellenitos)
El Paredón
The Driftwood Surfer – Fajitas. Vyas and I were very proud of our creations!
Santa Cruz la laguna (Atitlán)
Sabor Crocena: Blue corn pancakes
San Marcos la Laguna (Atitlán)
Samsara’s Garden:
Vyas: Green Start smoothie bowl with Kale, Avocado, bananas, almond milk, chlorella, spirulina, and moringa topped with granola, goji berries, chia and pumpkin seeds
Papa & Mama: Guacamole Heaven: guacamole, cilantro, zucchini and carrot zoodles, tomatoes and lemon served with black corn tortillas
Anjali: Zucchini noodles: zucchini noodles sautéed in ginger, pesto, red curry, basil and nutritional yeast served with toasted corn tortillas
Nilay: Soup of the day: curried Sweet Potato
Jocote:
There are so many fruits you can only find in certain regions of the country and only in the small local markets! We bought these 6 Jocotes for 2 Quetzales in the street in San Marcos. When ripe they turn bright red and their pulp is b right yellow with a sweet, juicy, tangy flavour. In winter they are used to make a Christmas treat with rapadura, cinnamon and allspice. In the rainy season, like now, locals just eat them when still green and crunchy.
