I hope you had a chance to read up on the mythology behind this place (if not, check out the Copacabana post). Papa was super excited to visit the island of Isla del Sol (and once he set foot he didn’t want to leave!) On the morning of Sept 27th we took off on the ferry. A lady sold the most delicious looking home baked chocolate chip cookies but Mama’s purse is buried in the depths of the boat so we miss out 😩. The boat creeps along the lake and so, despite it being less than 19km to Yumani, we only arrive 90min later at 10am. The weather is absolutely amazing. Our hostel is right by the port and the friendly lady welcomes us with a cup of mate de coca. Papa declares that he never wants to leave, he is in paradise. The views across the shores to the bright snowcapped mountains of Ancohuma, 3rd highest Bolivian mountain at 6,427m high are so beautiful.
We hike up 400m to the village, and to Las Velas, the restaurant where we eat a delicious pizza, at 4000m altitude with a magnificent view. The nice man opens the restaurant just for us, tells us to set up our table (ourselves) where we want – the views are just so stunning and all of it just for us!! -, tells us it will take about an hour for the pizza to arrive (it took nearly 2.5hours but we didn’t mind at all, with this view) and so we spend a leisurely lunchtime with the possibly most beautiful game of “Mensch” in the world. We hike back down, passing by a mount where we spend 2 hours building the village of Chevrette. Back at the hostel we eat another pizza before playing a round of “mensch” and going to bed.
The second day, we walk a nice hike in the with breathtaking views before heading back to Copacabana.
